Silverwood’s Story

The Farm Montessori School (Preschool–Kindergarten) planted the first seeds of Silverwood in 1984, originally known as Clear Creek Montessori. Rooted in this progressive beginning, the school quickly outgrew its space and, in 1986, moved to leased facilities on Dickey Road—becoming Silverwood. As new grades were added, more space and faculty were needed. A portable classroom was purchased, and co-directors Patty Sleasman and Peggy Iversen balanced leadership with teaching in the classroom. In 1988, Silverwood officially incorporated as a non-profit independent school.

A turning point came when Ben Kimball chose to sell his farm on Central Valley Road. Silverwood seized the opportunity through a 1997–98 capital campaign, purchasing five of Ben’s 18 acres. The Barn was renovated into a primary classroom, and the portable classroom was moved from Dickey Road to house intermediate grades. With the launch of an annual campaign in 1999, the Board of Trustees deepened its role in governance and support. In 2000, financing arranged with Ben Kimball allowed Silverwood to acquire the remaining 13 acres, creating a vital buffer and adding woods, a stream, a pond, and a meadow—transforming the land into a vibrant outdoor classroom and play space.

Silverwood was founded by Patty Sleasman and Peggy Iversen, whose vision continues to inspire the school today. Their leadership and dedication have been celebrated in many ways: at a 2003 dinner, through the establishment of the Patty and Peggy Endowment Fund for Teaching Excellence, and with the first Founders’ Day in 2010. Patty retired in 2004, Peggy in 2007, though Peggy continues to serve as an ex-officio board member.

In 2002, Silverwood was accepted as a Candidate Member of the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS). After completing its first self-study and hosting a visiting team in 2009, the school paused its initial application but used the feedback to strengthen long-term strategy. Silverwood remained a subscriber school, re-applied for Candidate Status in 2023, and is now actively preparing for full accreditation, expected in 2028.

Since the founders stepped back from day-to-day leadership, Silverwood has been guided by five Heads of School: Jaime Estill, Susan Radke, Bill Bedouin, Jon Torgerson, and Lisa Heaman.

Through all these transitions, Silverwood’s heart has remained the same: children and their learning come first. The faculty continue to embrace diverse teaching methodologies, families remain deeply engaged, and a spirit of dedication and joy fuels the community. Silverwood’s story is one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment to students.
